THE MYSTERY OF THE FIJIAN CLUB

 

A decades old mystery involving one of Plymouth’s favourite artists and a weapon used by Pacific natives has finally been solved. The wooden object had been the subject of discussions and debate for years involving the family of the late Beryl Cook and visitors to their city home on the Hoe. Beryl’s son, John, said: “It had been in our house for years – certainly since we moved in during the late 1960s.“It was regularly brought out when visitors came or during family get-togethers and at Christmas and the discussion would come up about ‘what is it?’“Nobody knew. Various ideas were put forward including a boat tiller or lacrosse stick.“Finally I discovered what it was during a visit to Exeter Museum. They had one – it turns out it is a Fijian Kiakavbo, a weapon dating from the late 18th or early 19th century
