The John Buckingham Collection Edward VIII Memorabilia

A fascinating collection of King Edward VIII memorabilia is to be auctioned in Plymouth this month.

Some 25 years ago John Buckingham, of Plymouth, bought two inexpensive Edward VIII intended coronation medals and realised that although he was broadly aware of the reasons for the Abdication he actually knew very little about the man himself.

A quarter of a century later and John has built up a fine collection of commemorative china including wares by Paragon, Doulton and Sutherland, alongside postcards, souvenirs programmes, photographs and all manner of memorabilia.

The collection features mainly on Edward’s  life before the abdication when he was Prince of Wales  in particular his visits throughout the UK and his overseas tours.

The collection includes an array of postcards and photographs all meticulously presented and annotated in albums , one particular album is John’s prized piece as it contains over 50 original photographs relating to Edward’s Australasian Visit in 1920 together with Souvenir programmes, press passes etc., ‘a very rare lot which is expected to sell for hundreds of pounds.’

There are also various items of Plymouth memorabilia including copies of photographs when the Prince of Wales first visited Plymouth in 1918 being received on the Hoe by the Mayor (Alderman J.P. Brown’) before he was made a Freeman of Plymouth in 1919.

The collection will be included in our auction on 29th February.

INVITATION TO CONSIGN ROBERT LENKIEWICZ PAINTINGS FOR THE MARCH ART AUCTION

Following the continued success of Robert Lenkiewicz paintings at our art sales we are pleased to announce the date of our next sale, Wednesday 21st March 2012.

A fine Self Portrait has already been consigned for the sale. The painting, which was acquired directly from the artist, is in excellent condition and is painted in oil on board. It is clearly inscribed to the reverse 'Self Portrait at the House Studio/ Lower Compton, Non Project piece'.

The back of the painting is signed twice and has distinctive orange painted triangle mark denoting that Lenkiewicz considered this to be a fine work and not for initial sale.

Measuring 56cm x 45cm it is a good size and is housed in a heavy 'Lenkiewicz' black frame.

The estimate is based on our valuation at £15,000-£20,000.

LIVE INTERNET BIDDING YIELDS RECORD BREAKING MAY COLLECTORS AUCTION

With some 213 bidders registered to bid live on the internet and a further 150 bidders registered directly with our saleroom we anticipated that the May Collectors auction would be busy.

However in almost twenty years we have rarely seen such a huge amount of bidding throughout an auction with almost 40% of sold lots going to online buyers.

As auctioneers we have recognised the need to invest in the facility of live internet bidding. This allows us to provide maximum exposure to every lot we sale and ultimately attract bids from the best collectors in the world. This was apparent at the sale with bidders actively bidding from Australia, Portugal, Los Angeles, New York, Russia., Germany, Italy, Spain, New Zealand and France. Many were succesful with their bids and many were indeed under bidders.

There were many surprises and high prices at the sale, too many to list herewith but we will be posting results in line soon.  The market for collector’s items is very bouyant at present and we are now inviting entries for the July sale. Please bring any items along to our valuation mornings Monday to Thursday 9.00am to 1.00pm.

SILVER TEA SERVICE SELLS FOR £3,300 on 10th August

As demands for silver continue rise we have seen some remarkable results at our salerooms for fine lots.

The August sale featured the first part of a collection of silver, selectively collected by a Plymouth gentleman over the last fifty years. Hammer prices for collection exceeded our expectations with the expected star attracting the most interest.

A fine early Victorian four piece silver service by Joseph Angell & Sons dating to 1845. The service  was in excellent condition and its slight Gothic style added to its appeal. The estimate of £1,500-£2,000 was considered to low by some, with several bidders willing to pay over £2000. A London commissions bid was beaten by a Westcountry bidder standing in the room at £3,300.

Other parts of the sale were equally bouyant with a further improvement in the demand for furniture and collectable’s, Clocks were particularly in demand with some high prices achieved for specialist collector’s clocks.

The sale results can be now be viewed.

Our next sale will be 3rd September.

VICTORIAN SILVER SALVER FETCHES £2,000, GOLD POCKET WATCH MAKES £830.

VICTORIAN SILVER SALVER FETCHES £2,000, GOLD POCKET WATCH MAKES £830.

A fine silver salver sold at the top end of its estimate on 1st December. Dating from 1852 the large 135 ounce salver was made by one of the leading silversmiths of the nineteenth century, Richard Garrard of London. Estimated at £1,000-£2,000 it was an Exeter based specialist buyer who secured it at £2,000.

The sale also included a fine Swiss single cylinder music box selling for £1,400 to a private buyer who also went on to buy a good Victorian silver tea set for £1,100 and a Chinese Export work box for £310. However it was two damaged pottery vases that lead the way in the ceramics section. An early Moorcroft vase was expected to sell at £100-£200 due to it being broken only a few weeks before the owner brought it in. Collectors thought differently and the estimate was eclipsed with it selling for £760 to one of the three telephone bidders.

A late Ming Dynasty Chinese blue and white jar and cover was in very poor condition with major damage. Bids were received from as far as Thailand but a new buyer in the room secured it at £1,100.

The demand for gold and jewellery continues with a wide range of lots sold including sovereigns up to £195, a Victorian insect brooch at £500, an 18ct gold pocket watch £830, gold bracelets £300 to £660, Victorian horn snuff mull £300 and a three dial silver pocket watch at £310.

FINE WATCHES AND JEWELLERY IN DEMAND AT SEPTEMBER SALE

A Gents Rolex Submariner wrist watch attracted the most attention at the art, jewellery and watch sale in September.

Estimated at £2,500-£3,000 the watch was in good condition apart from a small dent in one gold link. This did not deter bidders as three phone lines were in operation alongside several bidders bidding live online. A Plymouth collector finally out bid all the competition to take the watch at a hammer price £4,000.

The highest prcie of the sale was left for a fine and large diamond solitaire ring that had been in the same Cornish family for sometime. This sold on commission for £7,000, at the low end of our printed estimate.

A fine 18ct gold Patek Philippe pocket watch that was once owned by Henry Hunt who was British Vice Consul working in Odessa, Russia around 1875. This sold at the high end of the estimate to a bidder in the room at £2,000.

Four rolled up prints by British artist Frank Martin (921-2005) were signed in pencil and from limited editisn of 50. Although th ey were in poor condition with finger prints and spotting they generated considerable attention with the £800 esitimate being ovetaken when they sold at £1,420.

Jewellery sold well again with diamond rings in demand, the highest price was achieved for a good diamond solitaire ring of good colour and clarity selling to a local private lady for £4,200.

PUNCH AND JUDY SHOW IS STAR OF THE SALE

A rare early Victorian original Punch and Judy show was the surprise star of the 1st June auction. The portable theatre compRised of original painted front boards and a collection of contemporary puppets and objects. An of esimtate of £1,500-£2,000 proved quite accurate when it sold for £2,000 to a Plymouth collectables specialist.

A 19th century Chinese carved ivory concentric puzzle ball attacted bids from as far as Hong Kong. The finely carved 4 1/2 inch ball came with a stand of the same period. Sadly the damage to the  inteior of the ball surpressed bidding. However the guide of £600 was comfortably surpassed whe it sold on commission for £1,450.

The June sale was underpinned by a good selection of watches, silverr and jewellery. Some notable prices included a Patek Philippe 18ct gold pocket watch at £1,000, a Breitling Chrono Matic Gents watch at £540, Chinese silver card case £450, Chinese silver tea caddy £530.

LIVE ON LINE SALES ATTRACTS WORLDWIDE BIDDERS

March has been a busy month at Plymouth Auction Rooms with premium inclusive sales of over £130,000. Three auctions of some 600 lots have attracted interest from as far as the United States, Australia and the Middle East.

We have seen a steady rise in the demand for fine jewellery, Gents watches, good pocket watches, modern British Art, silver and collectable ceramics.

Two evening sales for selected paintings and prints and also jewellery and watches saw a much higher percentage of sales to bidders bidding live on the internet.

We are investing in on line sales to provide as much exposure to every lot we sell. Worldwide collectors are made aware of any lots on offer that they may be collecting.

The sales results have are the best indication of the success of this style of bidding. Over the last few months we have seen a steady rise in the amount of registered bidders for all sections of our sales.

Results for our two specialist sales can be viewed on our Previous Auctions.

We are now inviting entries for the June auction featuring fine paintings, jewellery and watches. If you are considering selling or indeed buying and would like a valuation or further advice please contact Paul Keen.
